This poster was inspired by vibrant sculptures by an artist named Janet Echelman. After some sketches, the essence of her work was captured in a two-dimensional space. The shapes in the middle represent Echelman's sculptures while at the same time represent the letters "ASU" for the Appalachian State University. Additionally, as the Appalachian Trail is close to the university, the shapes were styled to symbolize stacked rocks, which can be found on the trail.
